Job Description

Sanitarians independently and effectively conduct assessments, inspections, and compliance review activities.

Required Qualifications

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in the sciences.

One-two years as Sanitarian In Training.
Valid driver’s license, liability insurance, automobile available.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee typically works in a normal office environment as well as in various work sites which involve potential exposure to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, unpleasant smells or odors and excessive levels of dust, dirt and other elements of typical Sanitarian work. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts in precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, pesticides, toxins or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, carry or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Licensing/Certification

•Successful passage of Registered Sanitarian exam. Acquisition and maintenance of the “Registered Sanitarian” certification from the State Board of Sanitarian Registration.
•Depending on job duties, employee may be required to acquire special certifications including but not limited to: Licensed Pest Control Operator, Healthy Homes Specialist, Class I Wastewater Operator, ServSafe, Certified Pool Operator, Asbestos Hazard Evaluation Specialist, etc.

• Performs job duties under the regulations, policies and procedures set forth by Summit County Public Health and outside agencies such as the County Fiscal Officer, Ohio Department of Health, and state and federal government.
• Meets inspection goals of assigned area.
• Completes documentation and tracks operator or property owner compliance.
• Reviews non-compliant operations or nuisances with program coordinator and/or supervisor.
• Testifies as an expert witness in court proceedings and/or attend administrative conferences.
• Uses professional judgment to apply scientific knowledge and regulations when evaluating environmental hazards and conditions.
• Attends county, city, village and/or township governance meetings or committees.
• Attends training programs to improve technical knowledge.
• Maintains cooperative working relationships among public and agency participants.
• Employee must be available for emergency service during routine and non-routine hours of operation as set forth by the Summit County Public Health Emergency Operations Plan.
• Performs any other duties as required for the efficient operation of Summit County Public Health.

Performs compliance duties related to: permitting of household sewage treatment systems (HSTS) and private water systems (PWS), site and soil evaluations for HSTS, real estate transfer inspections, nuisance complaints, operation inspections of HSTS and semi-public STS facilities, inspections for building and zoning reviews, Phase II storm water, drinking water sample requests, and other water quality programming. A strong candidate will possess training in geology, water quality, earth science, groundwater hydrology, or a related discipline.
